Pellet press
Pelletizing
A pellet press is used to produce pellets – compact cylindrical shapes made from biomass such as sawdust, wood shavings, wood chips, straw, hay, paper, or other organic materials. Pellets are mainly used as an environmentally friendly fuel, but also as bedding or feed in agriculture.
The principle of pelletizing consists of compressing finely crushed and properly conditioned material (usually with a moisture content of 10–15%) through a die with holes. High pressure and friction cause the material to be mechanically compressed, heated, and activate the natural binder (e.g., lignin in wood), allowing the pellets to hold their shape firmly without the need for adhesives.¨
